I may be different, but that doesn't change who I am

By: Regina, Age 18, Radford, Virginia

Yes, I do have moderate/severe learning disorders, ADD, Asthma, Speech and Language Impairment, and other disorders, but that doesn't change who I am. I am like any other high school kid who is a senior this year and getting ready for gradation. True, I have much more trouble then the average 18 year old high school kid has but why let that put me down?

I have been through so much in my young life that most adults in their late 30's early 40's have not been through, and probably have not dreamed of going through. I almost died when I was born, but I fought through it, and I have been fighting every day since then. I am a fighter and I will not let anything put me down.

I am in my high school choir and have been in choir since 6th grade in elementary school. I am in clubs at my school, I am in art, I am involved with school plays and I am going on a choir trip in April. You see, I may be a special needs child, but I am pretty much like everyone else despite the fact that I AM different. I may be on a 3rd-4th grade reading level but that doesn't change me as a person.

I am a strong, caring, loving, hard working girl. I just put all of my struggles into the Lord's hands and He guides me every path of the way. I have Him most of all to thank for getting me this far and never giving up on me because if it wasn't for him I would not be as far as I am to day. Believe me I have came a long way since I was born and still hope to come a long way. I am a dedicated Christian girl who loves going to church each Sunday and just being changed more and more each Sunday.

So take this from me, someone who has been a special needs child since she was born, which was 18 years ago. You may be different, and you may be stared at and pointed at, but just because you are different, doesn't change the kind of person you are at all. Just be that amazing person who everyone knows and loves and you will go far in life.
