Tips for Teachers - Creative Writing

March 2003

You can get three creative writing assignments from one single stimulus picture…and the kids love it.

Give an appealing action photograph to the student(s) (e.g., two boys galloping on horseback, a lineman climbing a light pole, a family at a dinner table, etc.) Show them the picture and –over three days– ask them to write three separate stories:

  • One wherein the picture occurs at the very beginning of the story.
  • One wherein the picture occurs at the conclusion of the story.
  • And one wherein the picture occurs in the middle of the story!
