Making a Mess of Math?
This month LD Online features new information on dyscalculia-learning disabilities involving mathematics. Two articles from The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) offer insight into diagnosis and treatment: Dyscalculia: A Quick Look briefly explains the learning disability and its warning signs by age. Dyscalculia explores the symptoms and approaches to establishing strategies that will help the student learn math more effectively. Tips include:
- Teach students to estimate numbers as a way to begin solving math problems
- Teach different ways to approach math facts
- Begin with concrete examples and move on to abstract ideas
- Offer more opportunities for practice and repetition than usual
- Have students work in an environment with few distractions
