Learn about Learning Disabilities
The more parents and teachers know, the more children succeed and grow. Read about dyslexia (reading problems), dysgraphia (writing problems), dyscalculia (math problems), and ADHD.
Voice of America provided these new articles to introduce people to learning disabilities. Even if you are experienced, read them so you have new material to share with others. Here are some key points:
- Dyslexia most commonly affects a person's ability to read, write, or spell. Although there is no cure, people with dyslexia can be successful learners.
- Dyscalculia is a problem that affects the brain's ability to process and understand the meaning of numbers. Some children with dyscalculia may not remember the correct order of operations when solving math problems.
- Some children with dyscalculia need carefully tailored practice to help them with math skills. For example, a teacher might use a number line or group objects to represent numbers. Students with dyscalculia might need extra time or a calculator to complete their work.
- Dysgraphia is a learning disability that affects writing. Early treatment can help prevent or reduce dysgraphia. For example, exercises can help improve hand strength and the ability of the muscles to remember how to write shapes.
- Teachers can help students with dysgraphia work around the disability. Assistance might include extra time to write, help with taking notes, or even a thicker-than-standard pencil.
- Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affect approximately five to ten percent of children worldwide. Medicines can sometimes help children experience calmer, clearer thinking for periods of time. But there is debate about medicating children with ADHD.
