Peterson's Planner

Peterson's has a database of about 1,500 private secondary schools and thousands of colleges. The descriptions are comprehensive, well-fleshed out, and often include links to the schools' own web sites. The site also includes test prep and financial planning information.

Pew Hispanic Center

The Pew Hispanic Center is a nonpartisan research organization that seeks to improve understanding of the U.S. Hispanic population and to chronicle Latinos' growing impact on the nation. The Center conducts scientific studies and public opinion surveys on a wide range of topics that are publicly accessible on its Web site.

Phonological Awareness and Literacy Screening (PALS)

PALS is funded through Virginia Reads grants and the University of Virginia. The PALS website includes: 1) a section where teachers return their class scores to UVA and receive an immediate summary report, 2) a page where principals and district representatives can receive summaries of their schools' PALS scores, and 3) more than a hundred instructional suggestions and activities, based on PALS screening sections.

Picturing America is a site created to provide information about historical events that shape the American history through the exposition of American Art (drawings, painting, etc.). This website has been created in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Humanities, it provides a timeline of historical events, articles to support the information, and other relevant links to expand research. This site also offers resources for teachers.

PIZZAZ: Cinquain poems

A poetry site designed to assist instruction of ESL students in poetry and other creative writing forms. The site has links and detailed information on poetry such as Cinquain, Diamante, Haiku and Limericks. It also has further information on other types of creative writing and tips for instruction.

Poetry Portfolios: Using Poetry to Teach Reading and Writing

This lesson from ReadWriteThink supports students' exploration of language and writing skills as they read and dissect poetry. Through a weekly poem, students explore meaning, sentence structure, rhyming words, sight words, vocabulary, and print concepts. (Appropriate for elementary, but some strategies can be adapted for older ELLs.)
