Story Arts: International Folktales

An online library of short international folktales for children to retell.

Storyline Online

The Screen Actors Guild Foundation produces this site, which presents audio and video clips of actors reading favorite children's books. Related activities are also included with each story.

StoryPlace

StoryPlace is an interactive site for children (with both an English and Spanish version), created to provide a virtual experience of going to the library and participating in the types of activities the library offers. StoryPlace currently consists of two libraries, the Preschool Library and Elementary Library, with new activities and themes added each month.

Strategies and Resources for Mainstream Teachers of English Language Learners

This downloadable booklet is one in a series of "hot topics" reports produced by the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory. These reports briefly address current educational concerns and issues as indicated by requests for information that come to NWREL. Each booklet contains a discussion of research and literature pertinent to the issue, a sampling of how Northwest schools and programs are addressing the issue, selected resources, and contact information.

Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education

SCALE supports campus-based literacy programs across the country. In these programs, college students serve as literacy tutors or teachers in their community.

Students Can Find the Main Idea

Teach your students to "consciously look for the main idea." This page from the School Success Library of McDowell High School provides a list of questions, and suggestions, to guide students as they read.

Study Dog

StudyDog is a complete Early Reading (pre-K thru 2nd grade) computer-based program aligned with the findings of the National Reading Panel. StudyDog Reading provides all of the components of a complete, evidence-based, comprehensive, and effective early-childhood reading program.

Summer Reading Resources

SummerReading.org is a website hosted by the public libraries of New York, Brooklyn, and Queens. The website suggests bilingual books and activities for kids, teens, and adults, as well as other online resources.

Sunshine State TESOL is committed to building a community of professionals teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) in the state of Florida.

Taft College: Online Writing Lab

This online writing lab includes essay samples as well as information about different kinds of essays.

Talking About Wordless Picture Books

Talking About Wordless Picture Books: A Tutor Strategy Supporting English Language Learners is designed to support tutors who are working with low-intermediate English language learner (ELL) parents in family literacy programs. Developed by NCFL with funding from UPS, the strategy provides detailed instructional activities to help ELL parents build and practice English conversational skills.

Target: Field Trip Grants

Target offered 5,000 fieldtrip grants of $800 or less this year. Teachers can apply through this website.

Teach English, Teach About the Environment

This ESL curriculum guide from the Environmental Protection Agency includes lesson plans, vocabulary lists, and activities. Designed for adults but appropriate for grades 4-12.

These activities focus on the parts of a book such as the Table of Contents and Index.

This site was created by Gail Dessler, and includes information and activities related to the situation of migrant workers during the Great Depression.

Teacher Vision: Popular Drama & Literature Resources

This website has "Popular Drama and Literature Resources," including links to Readers' Theater scripts. Although a membership is required to access most of the resources, the site is worth looking at, just to get ideas for the different kinds of scripts that can be used in Readers' Theater. The site also offers a free seven-day membership.

Teacher Vision: Readers' Theater

Here you'll find an article by Sam Sebesta describing Readers' Theater and its benefits, as well as a listing of recommended reading.

Teacher's Guide: Home of the Brave

Home of the Brave, a novel written in free verse by Katherine Applegate, tells the story of Kek, an eleven-year-old boy from the Sudan who arrives as a refugee to Minnesota in the middle of winter. The Teacher's Guide for includes discussion questions, activities on idioms and language, and web resources about the war in Sudan. Highly recommended for ELL educators and students. Appropriate for grades 4-12.
