The Barbara Bush Foundation supports literacy efforts across the country where parents and children can learn to read together.

Between the Lions

Between the Lions is an award-winning PBS children's series designed to help young children learn to read. The Web site includes games and materials from the show, including a literacy curriculum aimed at children ages 4-7.

Book Adventure

Using Book Adventure, young readers not only receive the intrinsic satisfaction of reading a book and demonstrating their comprehension through short quizzes, but also earn rewards for reading and demonstrating comprehension of the books they've read.

Center for the Book (Library of Congress)

On behalf of books and reading, the Center for the Book serves as an advocate, a catalyst, and a source of ideas — both nationally and internationally. Its major themes and projects are reading and literacy promotion, the role of books and reading in today's society, the international role of books, the recognition and celebration of America's literary heritage, and the history of books and print culture.

Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement, University of Michigan

The model that underlies CIERA's research efforts acknowledges many influences on children's reading acquisition: readers and texts, home and school, and policy and profession. CIERA's task goes beyond finding answers to persistent problems in reading through research to disseminating those solutions to people who impact children's early reading achievement: teachers, teacher educators, parents, policymakers, and others.

Children's Learning Institute

The University of Texas Health Science Center's Children's Learning Institute combines data and studies from the fields of psychology, neuro-development, education and child development to provide proven learning solutions derived from, and supported by, documented research.

Colorín Colorado

Colorín Colorado is a bilingual web site that provides information, activities, and advice on helping children learn to read and succeed at school. Developed by the Reading Rockets project, Colorín Colorado features practical information for Spanish-speaking parents, beautiful illustrations from Caldecott Award-winning illustrator David Diaz, video clips of celebrities such as the late beloved Celia Cruz, and skill-building activities that draw upon Spanish-language songs and rhymes.

Early Literacy Initiative, University of Minnesota

University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development trains reading tutors and sends them out to work with children; sharing the expertise of the college's literacy faculty with parents, teachers, and others who work with children; and coordinating other literacy activities.

Even Start Family Literacy

Even Start works to help break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving the educational opportunities of the Nation's low-income families by integrating early childhood education, adult literacy or adult basic education, and parenting education into a unified family literacy program.

Everybody Wins!

Everybody Wins! is a privately-funded non-profit organization devoted to increasing children's prospects for success in school and in life through one-to-one reading experiences. POWER LUNCH is a lunch-time literacy and mentoring program pairing elementary school students with adult volunteers.

First Book

First Book is a national nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and to own their first new books. The primary goal of First Book is to work with existing literacy programs to distribute new books to children who, for economic reasons, have little or no access to books.

Get Ready to Read!

Get Ready to Read!'s program vision is that all preschool children will have the skills they need to learn to read when they enter school. This site is part of NCLD's initiative to provide parents, educators, health-care professionals, and advocates with tools to help build early literacy skills, including a bilingual early literacy screening tool.

Ghotit

Ghotit offers unique writing and reading online services for people who suffer from dyslexia or dysgraphia. Ghotit's first service is an online context sensitive spell checker. Ghotit was founded by people that suffer from dyslexia and it's mission is to improve the overall quality of life of a dyslexic.

International Reading Association

The International Reading Association is a professional membership organization dedicated to promoting high levels of literacy for all by improving the quality of reading instruction, disseminating research and information about reading, and encouraging the lifetime reading habit. IRA members include classroom teachers, reading specialists, consultants, administrators, supervisors, university faculty, researchers, psychologists, librarians, media specialists, and parents.

Kidsreads.com

Kidsreads, part of The Book Report Network, is a great place for kids to find info about their favorite books and authors, and reviews of the newest titles.

Learning Ally

Founded in 1948 as Recording for the Blind, Learning Ally serves more than 300,000 K-12, college and graduate students, veterans and lifelong learners — all of whom cannot read standard print due to blindness, visual impairment, dyslexia, or other learning disabilities. Learning Ally's collection of more than 65,000 digitally recorded textbooks and literature titles — downloadable and accessible on mainstream as well as specialized assistive technology devices — is the largest of its kind in the world.

LEARNS

Linking Education and America Reads through National Service (LEARNS) is a partnership of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL),the Bank Street College of Education BSC), and the Southern Regional Council (SRC.) LEARNS provides training and technical assistance to projects focused on literacy and education, including Americorps, Senior Corps, and Learn and Serve. Muskingum College Center for Advancement of Learning - Learning Strategies Database

The CAL Learning Strategies Database is a collection of learning strategies intended for use in postsecondary contexts, but applicable to elementary and secondary levels, or adults, with modification. Designed for both students and instructors, this site helps students understand and take responsibility for their own learning.
