"CONQUER COLLEGE WITH LD"

After 13 years as the ONLY Learning Specialist at a community college of 14,000+ students, I resigned from frustration. Hordes of new students came seeking help, and I had only 25 hours a week to serve them. Consequently, I saw student after student fall through the cracks, and I was helpless to do anything about it. I knew it didn't have to be this way.

Years earlier, when we didn't have as many seeking services, I was able to see new students three times a week. I noticed that students committed to frequent tutoring were often successful enough to transfer to 4-year colleges, whereas those who chose to "go it alone" often failed, lost confidence, and dropped out.

Since then, I have realized that most students with disabilities come to college sorely unprepared in terms of requisite skills - academic, metacognitive, self-advocacy, and awareness of how to navigate successfully.

Thus came to be "CONQUER COLLEGE WITH LD", a 10-session course for high school students and their parents, to proactively teach strategies that result in college success.
