Subject: Classification as "At Risk" Adult for 34 year old
Our 34 year old LD daughter is a missing person with Law Enforcement as of April 8, 2005. She is in the company of a drug using, petty criminal who has a warrant for his arrest regarding Domestic Violence toward our daughter. Law enforcement informs us that their policies regarding pursuit of this man as well as searching for our daughter will be greatly escalated if our daughter is identified as an "At Risk" adult who has been abducted by an abuser. Please advise us regarding where and how to obtain such an "At Risk" adult designation. Society recognizes "Mental Retardation" as an at risk catagory, but not LD. A recent NPR program pointed out that many LD persons are certainly in an at risk catagory despite their intelligence.
Our daughter was designated as severely LD upon entering the school system and from age 2.5 forward received occupational, speech and physical therapy in order to function or even to perform minimally.
Thanks,
Dan W Martin

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she leaves the abuser soon and makes it to safty.
I have never heard of an LD adult being categorized as "at risk." This is a legal issue. Are the police not able to walk you though the process?
Warm thoughts to you and your family during this difficult time.

Barb,
Thank you for your reply and sympathy.
Curiously, the police involved at this point appear so far to delegate this to attorneys or LD experts. Locating persons knowledgeable, especially, an attorney regarding such matters is my challenge. I've sent in an inquiry to Matt Cohen, Esq. (http://www.ldonline.org/ask_ldonline.php?s=cohen) who I hope can send me in the right direction. I also hope that the discussion board may turn up someone with relevant experience.
