Subject: ADHD-Academically suffering because of Behavior

I seem to be having a problem convincing my son's school staff...teachers, principal, vice principal, counselor...that his behavioral problems are linked to his academic problems. (I'm trying to receive 504 modifications) I have a meeting scheduled with the group of them today and I think I have educated myself enough, but I was just wondering if anyone out there has any help as to how I might approach this problem.Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

: The title of your post is confusing. Does your son have ADHD? ADHD children can have behavioral problems in school even when they are doing well in school. What is your contention? That if your son had no academic problems, all behavioral issues would go away? That might be true but that might be hard, sadly, for educators to believe of an ADHD child. Is there a time in your son's past when he was not manifesting behavioral issues in school? YOu could point to those past times as an example of how he was and could be again.Does he have academic problems across the board? In every class? If not, his behavioral issues might not manifest in the classes where he's doing better. To help you, it would help to have a little more information about your son. Until then, good luck with your meeting.I seem to be having a problem convincing my son's school

Hi Elizabeth,I can't tell from your post how you think academics and behavior are interacting to cause difficulties for your son. Could you give more details about what you think is going on, and what you would like to have happen in order to help your son do better? Also, what modifications or accommodations have already been tried? JJ: I seem to be having a problem convincing my son's school

Having a ADHD child myself I can speak from experience.Academics does not cause ADHD but can exasterbate the problem some teaching strategie work well and some cause more problems. Check to see if he does better in some classes than other and find out how calmly the teacher structures the classroom in the classes. You did not mention whether the child is diagnosed by reprutable Dr. and if medication is involved. The more documention you have from Dr.s and theraphist you have the more clout you have if you have none up in Canada you might as well save your breath. I don't think your end of the world would be much differant. If you need any more information please feel free to Email me. J A
