Subject: HELP! MY LD IS HURTING :(

I have the kind of LDs that don't really hit you in the face when you first encounter me so A LOT of people get frustated with me. I hate the moments when people are rightfully angry but I, at the same time do not owe them an explanation of myself. It puts me in such a helpless place. I constantly apologize, I smile, I always say thank you... It's hard but I think sometimes answering people with a statement of the kind of person you are is stronger than saying, "I'm sorry, I have (insert name of disorder)." That way I show people what it MEANS to have my LDs long before I say what they are.

Today was a bad day...so I was just putting that out there.

What are five things you're good at? Stuff you don't have to apologize for?

My response to your question is to understand rather than to be rude. I'm confused. How does stating your disorder show people what it means to have a LD? Without any knowledge of the history of LD, I believe people will not understand what it is that you have and what that means. It's like saying, "Hi, my name is Jane and I have ADHD." Ok, and....

You don't have to apologize for who you are. Is your purpose to educate everyone? Focus on what you need to do rather than focus on their reactions which is causing you to explaining yourself. Relax and remember, there are some people who will get mad at you and it's not even because of you.
