Subject: looking for software vocabulary
I'm looking for a good cd-rom to help develop better vocabulary starting at the third to fourth grade level.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Joan

I haven't found software for vocabulary development that I like... vocabulary development is complex (not like learnign the times tables) and there's a lot of lively discussion as to how it's best delivered.
I do have a lot of vocab. materials on my site (including some articles on vocab. development) - www.resourceroom.net - in the "reading comprehension" section. It includes some online vocabulary development exercises that I've worked up for students here; probably a little advanced for waht you're talking about.
If my job disappears when this grant goes away, I may *develop* that software :-)

I like the WordSmart computer CDs. Website is http://www.wordsmart.com. For 3rd/4th you would want the very first CD, I think (Volume A). I agree that vocabulary development is complex, but these CDs are a great supplement for most children.
The CDs are very expensive purchased from the website and the company is very aggressive with its sales pitch over the phone (will try to sell you a subscription for the entire set). I would advise checking eBay, as I have seen sets sell there for very reasonable prices. If you buy used, just make certain you get the serial # along with each CD. You must have the serial # when you go to install the CD on your computer.

You may want to explore www.readwritethink.org and look for the lesson plans under "vocabulary." This site has a lot of excellent interactive student tools and you can spend an entire day exploring all the resources. This is an outstanding teacher resource website.
Look at the student materials and see if any of these will assist you in customizing vocabulary skill development.
