Hi -
I've not posted in a very long time. Thanks so much everyone for the excellent advice I got before!
I have a son going into 5th grade with ADD.
Last year was a very good year homeschooling for the first time.
I need some help finding a good history book.
Last year we tried ( and disliked) Story of The World.
We switched to Oxford First Ancient History which worked well and I liked the straight forward secular approach.
Any suggestions for 5th grade History?

My students really liked "A Child's History of the World" by Virgil Hillyer. Its original publication date was around 1929, but has been reprinted. You can purchase it through Sonlight or Calvert school. Calvert also has a workbook they wrote to accompany it. CHOW is easy to read, and it's easy to skip some stories or supplement others. It's a one year world history book. I showed related videos, did art projects, and the students performed a play (Trojan War). Good luck!

When I taught history, I got any ol' textbook so I could figure out what I needed to cover for the year, broke it up into units, and then used nonfiction books with lots of pictures, and movies when I could find them, from the library for the actual teaching. I also used a *lot* of pictures from the web (there are some good - even legal, copyright wise :=)) - image libraries online).
I tried (with some success :-)) to make history "Stories" - as in, these folks did *not* know how it was going to turn out while it was happening!
