Subject: Reading programs for older students
Can anyone give some suggestions for good researched based reading programs for older students(high school and adult)? Thanks.

Rewards Secondary from Sopris West is excellent. It can be done either one-on-one or in a classroom format. (If doing classroom, getting the video helps you learn how to pace a lesson and use hand signals to keep the class together.) This program works best when the students already read at a beginning 4th grade level or better. If the reading level is lower than that (but at least 2nd grade level), then it's better to do Rewards Intermediate first. These programs are entirely scripted, so they are very easy to do without special training. They are very efficient at teaching multi-syllable decoding skills and also do a lot of work drilling vowel sounds.

I developed Great Leaps for non-reading middle school students. It has expanded from there.

I am a mom to 2 dyslexic boys. I just completed the REWARDS Secondary program with my older son (12 years old). There was a noticeable improvement just over the summer. The program gives students strategies for decoding longer words. Now I find him actually sounding out longer words instead of guessing or skipping over them.
We are ready to move on to something that incorporates more reading comprehension. I have purchased the REWARDS Plus program for Social Studies, but may save it for next summer. I am currently looking into SRA's Corrective Reading. We just started SRA's Spelling Through Morphographs, which I hope will also help with decoding longer words.
Also, I have been using the Great Leaps program with my younger son (10 years old) for almost a year. It was recommended to me by a neuropsychologist at the UC Davis Mind Institute because my son has a serious reading fluency problem. He has made great gains!
