Subject: parent issues

I just got out of high school and now entering college in the art department... But I'm having a problem with my parents.
Just the other day I was asked by my father to bring something to his car, and apparently I don't remember him saying that to me, so I didn't do it. Then he got mad and starting blowing off saying how I never pay attention, never follow directions, and I was going to fail in life if I don't stop this.

Now he is my step father, and I don't think he's got a good idea what it's like to have LD. And I've tried to explain to him that sometimes I have a taking in all the information and keeping it stored. But he thinks I'm just trying to think of an excuse to get out of it.

Do you guys have any ideas how to get through to him? Or is it just me?

Hi. Did you know what it was (the item) and where it was? If you cannot retrieve it immediately, find some scratch (scrap) paper to write it down (the item name) and put it where you know you will remember to retrieve it--like tucked in your wallet or underneath your keys (use the keys as a paper weight. Try it.

Just an idea. Ask your father to make certain he makes eye contact and to speak slowly and clearly when he asks you to do something.Repeat back to him what he asks you to do to not only be certain you understand but to help you remember. Then immediately do it before anything distracts you. If you must do something else first then do something that will help you remember to do it. I put reminders in my cell phone. I you don't have one then try putting a sticky note on a mirror or some other place. the dash of my car is where i put reminders for appointments. I wish you the best in college.
