Subject: kdgn. student with dyslexia

I have recently found out that a student in my kindergarten classroom has been diagnosed with a reading disability/ dyslexia. I am looking for an ideas/programs that can help him and methods that can help me teach this wonderful little child. We do use the LIPS program at our school and he will be receiving services from our L.D. teacher. This is his 2nd year of kindergarten and I want to make this year as successful as possible.

I think it is wonderful you are interested in trying to help this little boy! My inclination is to say that you and the LD teacher need to get together and coordinate. If she is the one teaching the LiPS, then perhaps she can keep you informed as to what she is working on so you can help him practice the skills he is being taught. Hopefully as he begins to understand sound-symbol relationships and blending, etc., he may also pick up on some of the phonics instruction you do in your class as well. It is unusual to get a dyslexia diagnosis for a kindergartener, but it is certainly wonderful for him to get help so early! I highly recommend the book, Overcoming Dyslexia, by Sally Shaywitz, if you'd like to learn more about dyslexia.
