Subject: dyslexia help

I'm new here and have a few questions. My son who is 14 in 8th grade has comprehension dyslexia. For sixth grade he was tested on a 4th grade reading level. For seven/eight grade we moved to a new dist. According to the first set of tests they did he is on a second grade reading level. So i asked for the tests to be done again. The second tests were very conflicting. He was on a second grd level for the one and a sixth grd level for the other. Since the results were conflicting i requested a IEE at schools exspense. Which they agreed but not without a fight. He has not yet had the IEE done. Here are my questions.

1. How do i go about getting a dyslexia trained person to work with my son in school at schools exspense?

2. How can his testing results from one school to another school be so far off from each other? They were the same tests done at both school.

3. How can his results be so many levels apart? Second grade level to a sixth grade level?

4. Is there anything else i should be asking of his school to provide for him so he can succeed?

I feel he is on around a fifth grade reading level. However,,His problem is not so much the reading. It's the comphension part that he doesn't get. Any help or advice would be great.

Showing such a spread in test results may mean a lot of things. When my dd had an IEE done the SLP we saw was amazed at the spread in her vocab tests which went from 1st grade level to college level. She even ran one test twice to make sure the high level was correct.

I would see what the IEE testing comes up with and go with the recommendations presented in the report.

You need an IEP. There's a great Web site at http://www.wrightslaw.com/

2. How can his testing results from one school to another school be so far off from each other? They were the same tests done at both school.

You want a multidisciplinary evaluation done by a psychologist you hire. The school psychologists may be good, but they still answer to the school. Also, the same tests cannot be performed less than one year apart. The school must take into consideration the testing performed by another psychologist.

3. How can his results be so many levels apart? Second grade level to a sixth grade level?

When a child has a learning disability, this disparity exists. If it doesn't, s/he may have other issues (e.g., low intelligence), but is not learning disabled.
