Subject: Question about grants and other programs.

I was wondering if people here know of any programs or grants for people in collage with a l.d.? I moved to TN so that I can go to school. The thing is I'm here alone working throught school. I have no family here and I'm finding hard to make ends meet and get through school.

I heard from many people there are grants and government programs that will help with my cost of living while in school. I'm hoping some one can help me with this. I have allready tryed getting help through my school and I was told by financial aid that they dont help with that kind of thing.

Every state has a Department of Rehabilitative Services (it might have a different name in your state). It's mission is to help people with disabilities get the vocational training they need to hold a job and be self-supporting. Learning disabilities are one type of disability that they are supposed to cover.

Each state has leeway to have their own policies and regulations on how they dispense funds. I have talked to financial aid officers at several colleges atht have programs for students with learning disabilities and they say there is a wide range of funding that some of their students qualify for.

I live in Maryland and relatively speaking theeir funnding is not very good. But you should definitely check t his out.

I tried asking for help from Rehabilitative Services when I lived in North Carolina. If you live in Tenessee, chances are they won't help you! They told me that they only help people who are out of work and have injuries. I had a fulltime job at the time (Wal-Mart), which didn't amount to anything, but as far as they're concerned if you can work anywhere it wasn't their job to help me find employment. I would suggest going there and explaining your situation, but don't be disappointed if they aren't able to help. The program is federally underfunded and they aren't especially sympathetic to those of us who have hidden "disabilities."
