Subject: wellbutrin?

Does anyone have any experience with children with ADHD and welbutrtin? My eight-year-old daughter can't seem to tolerate the stimulant meds so we are trying this. The stimulants give her anxiety attacks and leave her jittery and freaked out, so we cut them out. She's been on the welbutrin (37.5 mg) for two days and tonight seemed pretty irritable. Don't know if it's just a bad day or if it's the drug. Anybody out there with any experience with this? P.S. Mandi, I am already well aware of your thinking on this; please allow others to weigh in on this.

Yes i know you want to get other opinions. I hope you do. Will keep this very short.

This drug is not even an aproved indication for the treatment of ADHD.

My daughter has tried Wellbutrin twice. The first time she became manic (tons of extra energy and non-stop talking) after 2 weeks. She asked to stop taking the med because she was getting in trouble at school for talking too much. The second time she tried it she was on it for 3 months and became increasingly irritable and aggressive during those months.

Definitely talk with her doctor. It might also be a good idea to see if there is something else that might be causing ADHD type symptoms. Depression, Anxiety, visual issues, sensory issues, etc. can have symptoms similar to ADHD and may be overlooked.

As an FYI, Wellbutrin never did anything for my ADHD issues and actually over time, made my LD/ADHD problems alot worse, particularly memory problems. I would lose things I had no memory of losing. It was quite frightening.

It also made me extremely scattered and many people report similar experiences.

Wellbutrin is known for those type of startup effects. Even when I was pro-meds, my rules was that if a drug had major start up effects, it was not the right drug.

I know professionals say you should ride it out but everytime, I followed that rule, I payed dearly. So I made up my own rules:)

Have you tried fish oil capsules? Good brands with high EPA seem to work best.
