Tips on teaching essay writing.

I am a counselor in a high school alternative education setting. I don't have any tips or experience in teaching essay writing, but from watching my teachers work with their students who have attention problems, I've noticed that they give frequent breaks and work with shorter stories to keep the student's interest. Our English teachers also give the students a choice of doing a research paper or a powerpoint project with the same number of references and amount of information.
