Subject: Understanding Underlying Causes of LD

Hi guys,

My name is Sam Hoath and I am the director of www.betterlearninginstitute.com A 'first of its kind' online resource that provides online assessments and programs that help children, teens and adults overcome learning difficulty and behaviour problems.

We provide a free online assessment, which helps identify any underlying dysfunction that can be the cause of learning difficulty, many of which are associated with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, Autism, Asperger's and coordination issues.

I am a grandfather of an 8 year old girl that has just been diagnosed with learning disabilities. The psychologist recommended getting her a laptop computer. Is there a recommended laptop that is best to suit her needs?

Dear NUCC -
Without knowing more about her specific profile, it is difficult to make recommendations.

Does she struggle with reading? What apsects of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehsnion?

Does she have dysgraphia -- difficulty with written expression? What aspects of dysgraphia -- pencil grip, motor skills, grammar mechanics, spelling?

Dose she have dyscalculia -- difficulty with math?

Does she have difficulty with memory? Short term and/or long term memory?

Are there auditory or visual processing issues?

All of these factors would coorelate into what might be beneficial and useful. What did the psychologist recommend and why?

In the interim, here are some articles that might be of value: http://delicious.com/dhfl143/AT

Here on LDOnline there are some fabulous resources: http://www.ldonline.org/cse?cx=018213866340234083221%3Ahh6qnz0cy2u&cof=FORID%3A11%3BNB%3A1&ie=UTF-8&q=assistive+technology#818

Best wishes.

For those who are interested, The Better Learning Institute is an exercise and movement program.

For clarification -- it is not a multi-sensory structured reading program.
