Subject: communication with persons with forms of mental disabilities

I work in a day respite center and would like to develope a communication tool for our clients with mental disabilities. How do I communicate our complaints mechanism or our consumers rights and responsibilities in relation to care and many other topics? Do I use pictures or questures..... Any ideas or examples (I don't want to reinvent the wheel) out there. Kind regards George

Subject:??

"Communicate our complaints mechanism"???

Are you trying to tell these folks how to make complaints and advocate for themselves?
Some surfing spots:

http://soeweb.syr.edu/thechp/disres.htm
http://www.qiat.org -- this site focuses on "assistive technology standards" but the e-mail group deals with a lot of questions that sound like waht you're asking, so I'd read through some of the archives and consider hopping on board and asking them your question.

http://www.ed.sc.edu/caw/toolbox.html -- lots of sites about lots of special ed things.

Thanks Sally for the info which is helpful to me. Yes I am looking to communicate to my clients that they have reights and there is a complaints mechanism in place. I also like to communicate things like 'are you happy/unhappy' or 'why' and 'what to do about it. Are there cue cards or such things arround?
I found on the net info from "Augumentative Communication Home" the e-talk. This sort of thing is out of touch for me. (financiel reasons)
But has somebody created 'picture sybols' or cue cards themselfs or is info about this 'pictur talk' around?
Thaks for listening to me query. George Farmer

I think this exact question came up on the www.qiat.org email list, and somebody had some websites that had some printable cards with pictures... yup!

Here's how to find the thread (happy surfing...)
1. go to www.qiat.org
2. There's a list of topics near the top of the page; click on "listserv"
3. Scroll down and click to go to the "archives"
4. Search the archives for "picture communication symbols" as the subject.

You really might want to subscribe to the list and bounce your problem at them. These are other folks 'in the trenches' and they have lots of good ideas.
