aspergers syndrome

My son has also been referred to as having Asperger's syndrome, although his father and I believe that he demonstrates more traits of hyperlexia than aspergers. Regardless of if it is asperger's, hyperlexia, or high functioning autism, we do know alot about all subjects. Our son is 5 and we have had him enrolled in a public school for the past year. We have worked closely with a speech therapist, occupational therapist, and special ed teacher to devise a program for him that encorporates accomodations for his disorder in his daily school life. Yes, our son too has difficulty with social interaction. It may be easier for us since we can sit down with him and role play, or write social stories, or even set up play dates, but I do know that there are centers that have social skills group therapies, there are videos that you and your husband can buy to devise your own program at home (try the hyperlexia association web page at www.hyperlexia.org), and there are parent forums. There is a parent forum specifically for parents of children with asperger's syndrome. I am a middle school teacher, and I have set up mentore or buddy systems for kids who have a difficult time in the past.
