Subject: SIPPs?

Hey has anyone ever heard of SIPPs reading program? I just asked my daughters new special ed teacher what she was using and she told me about. I was wondering if anyone on here knows anything about it.

Thanks,

Janine

LiPS is a very good, very well-known program of Lindamood-Bell. Only thing is, it often is not done with sufficient frequency at school to be totally effective. I think the minimum is supposed to be 3 hours a week.

The rap about LIPS needing to be 3 hours a week to be effective is EVERY bit as true of every single program that exists. They ALL need consistency, with daily repetition the best. It's no more true of LIPS than it is of ANY program whether it be Orton Gillingham, Reading Reflex, etc. When kids are learning to read, they need daily practice for it to stick. A half hour a day works just fine. 45 minutes is better.

Actually I found out what SIPPS is. It's a reading program created by a professor at the local university in our city. Anyway, I found the website and no its not LIPS I wish it was. I did see that they had Linda Mood Bell training workshops availiable as well but for the Specail Ed teachers its a cost of seven hunderd a workshop where as this SIPPs was only seventy. The teacher told me she will be using the SIPPS program for a big part of the day but that she also uses other programs as well. I agree, I would rather have the LMB program for about 4 hours a day one on one then this program. We may end up forking over money for LMB durning the summer.

Thanks Mary,

Janine

I remember Reid Lyon speaking at an IDA conference some years back -- In the research the NIH was doing then on reading interventions, **THE** most important factors, at least for the first two years' success, were the frequency and intensity of the remediation. It's critical not to lose sight of this.
