Subject: a disabled adult who did not learn to read and write

hello all,

I have a very extreme and complicated case. My friend abdul, who is disabled, was born with spinal muscular atrophy. His vision is so bad, that doctors will not operate on him, because of how unlikely it is to recover. As he was growing up in a foreign country, wheelchair students were not permitted to learn in school property( no ram or no elevators at the time). He is now 32 years old and for the past few weeks(twice a week) I've been trying to teach him to read and write. I've noticed his short term memory is awful, as soon as i explain the pronunciation of "pet" , i quickly change the topic to " how was your day" and right back to pet. he immediately forgets and does not come close to the pronunciation. another problem, he confuses the letters p,q,d,b, so i would work with him for a few hours and the next time we meet, we work on them again. When i think he has learned the sounds the alphabet makes, much to my surprise, he forgets some of them. he is unable to hold any form of information into memory. with his bad vision, I have to write words 6 inches high on white board. is it possible teach him how to read and write, if so, what can i do to help out? if not, i don't want to waste his and my time and simply enjoy life to the fullest.
