Subject: IDEA vs DODDS

I wasn't sure how to answer this question I saw another parent ask on a military parent bb. She is in Germany trying to get 1 on 1 help for her ld/adhd son (highschool) and states that DODDS will only allow this for autistic children. She then wonders if IDEA overrides DODDS school district. I know the fed law supercedes state and local policy, however, I don't think it is specific to getting 1 on 1 help. Can anyone help? Yes I've become quite a busybody. She also asked a question that I am curious about. Is there any agency that advocates for parents/kids in the DODDS schools? I know about the exceptional family member program coordinator, don't know if using military lawyers is conflict of interest. Lots to wonder about. Only one more year and I'll be fighting in the states again. Booo!
Thanks y'all.

Yes, Amy there is an organization that is speciacally for those students in the DODDS/DDEAS system. The organization is called STOMP and is located at the Washington Pave web site. Heather Hebdon is the director of STOMP and if the parent accesses Pave's web site and goes to the STOMP project, she can e-mail Heather directly. Depending on where she is located depends on how assessable the Exceptional Family Member Program manager is and what they can do in their capacity. Therefore anyone connected to STOMP can help her out.

actually the stomp site is where I saw the letter, I am not sure about the listserv thing there. Thanks for the answer though. I personally haven't had too much trouble myself with DODDS but I talked with the efmp coordinator where we are located, she was very helpful and offered to go to meetings with me if I thought I needed her. I did suggest this to the lady on the stomp site also.

Amy all that parents have to do, is e-mail Heather and she does answer e-mails. If your EFMP manager actually attends iep meeings in DODDS, then be grateful for that as most do not. JAG; which are the military lawyers assist the solidiers in writing wills, defending or prosecuting court martial offenses etc they don't handle education issues involving DODDS, DDEAS nor the American public school system.

I work in a district that services high school children from a local military base (the military base has their own DODDS elementary/junior high school). It appears to me that DODDS schools must follow IDEA-at least based on the evaluation and due process information I receive from this particular DODDS school when the kids come to us.
