Subject: Foreign Language for dylexic/dysgraphic son

My 15 y.o. high school son is gifted but dyslexic/dysgraphic. He has had extensive remediation and help, and his main difficulties now is with speed of processing & writing. He needs to learn a language, has started on Spanish, but the standard way of learning is very frustrating for him. So last summer he spent 1 month in Guatemala at a one-on-one Spanish school living with a Guatemalan family. He loved it, but it was expensive. Any suggestions as far as curricula? (I would say he has probably completed the equivalent of 1st year high school Spanish.) Rosetta Stone CD? The Learnables? I was hesitant to try Power-Glide because of the funny little hieroglyphics in their books - that's all he needs- more codes to decipher!! (after already learning the English written alphabet & struggling with music)Also, has anyone sent their dyslexic/dysgraphic student to Concordia Language camp for the 1 month high school course? How was it?

EMAILNOTICES>noI can't suggest any particular programs, as I'm not familiar with them. I know nothing about Concordia Language Camp, alas, so I can give you no advice there. I do have a question for you. Can your son learn foreign words by listening? If he can learn, he could probably learn Spanish by ear. Nelson Rockefeller did, and he was severely dyslexic. It would be something to think about as you're trying to put together a foreign language curriculum.Yours truly, Kathy G.

My son is also dyslexic/dysgraphic and 14 yrs old. We use Destinos Spanish from Annenberg Learning. We only did the first 2 lessons. It follows the immersion method of learning, similar to your son's experience in Guatemala. It may be too early to say for certain, but my son loves it. He likes trying to figure out what's going on in this romance (soap-opera) type story. We rent the vidoes from PAHomeschoolers, and I bought the book, audio cassettes from Annenberg.Susan Richmond from PAHomeschoolers sent her dd to Concordia Languages for 2 summers. She may be able to answer your questions, and a letter to Concordia Languages may help too.
