are these symptoms of ADHD?

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone else with adhd find they have any of these problems?;

Not being able to put thoughts into words, When I try to tell a story it always ends up coming out backwards not making sense, people always get confused and so do I about what i said.

extreme laziness, not brushing teeth, showering or even eating

I always seem to be the one that spills the bottle of coke on me in a restauraunt, and I frequently walk into things, impulsivity? or just lack of coordination?

Taking a long time, like an hour, to reply to a SMS phone message, letters and emails far longer, just to not sound stupid and so it makes sense

Im trying to work out whether I have ADHD but cannot see a specialist at this stage. I have all the major symptoms except hyperactivity, I would really like to know wether these things are common in people with adhd, thanks for your help

Hi,

Some could be associated with ADHD, but everyone has their own set of problems and not everyone has they same.

Sound like you are depressed too. I think you should get psychological testing. Maybe you could get it at the state Vocational Rehabilitation Dept.
or through a local State or City and County Mental Health Dept.

Have you checked out www.add.about.com??

That is a good one to start with. Not brushing you teeth is just asking for false teeth. Get up and brush right now. I MEAN IT, RIGHT NOW. !!!

At least get that brush and bring it back to the computor and brush while you are on line. You don’t have to stand at the sink to do it. This is really important
Dude.

Also get a psychological workup and see if you can get some psychotherapy and anti depressants if necessary. Might really help you. THEN work on the ADHD if that’s what it is. Have you gone to the library and checked out any books to read? There should be several. Browse thru them. You don’t have to actually read them all if reading is hard for you. Find parts that interest you and read those.
Go to www.addwarehouse.com for ideas for books. If you library doesn’t have them, ask the librarian about getting books on loan from other libraries. Many libraries have loans available from other libraries.

Another good web site is www.adda.org I think that is the address.
If you go to www.google.com ( a web portal ) just type in “web sites about adults with ADHD” , or type in ADHD and adults or something like that.
Good luck. And check out the depression stuff. Anti depressant can take a couple weeks to get going. I hear that Zoloft and Wellbutrin are good. sometimes together too. Wellbutrin can made you a bit aggitated the first few days and then levels off.
Good Luck

ADHD often goes hand in hand with a type of depression called dysthymia. It’s a low level depression that stays with you most of the time. It’s like setting up a row of dominoes verrry carefully and then doing something stupid that causes them all to fall over… and then setting them up even more carefully again and again holding your breath and watching them fall. At times you may even spiral into full blown clinical depression. I have ADHD… but at age 49… you won’t actually see the hyperactivity unless I am hyper verbalizing….. It’s different for adults because we have been so conditioned to sit still. Your lack of motivation to complete even simple tasks could be procrastination because you have so many mundane tasks that you don’t know which one to do first. You you just remain dormant. I agree that you need to read read read… about ADHD and about Depression…. you should have no trouble being seen for depression and once you get in and are diagnosed one way or another… you will have your answer.

Thanks both of you for your help.

Im leaving to go overseas next week for 6 months so I decided to self medicate with the health foods Spirulina and Brahmi tablets, If this helps at all im going to try and avoid getting diagnosed, although Im almost certain that I do have adhd and the more I read the more certain I am. If life is still unbearable for me my friends or family I will go to see someone.

Anyway thanks very much for your time and help,

Jay

Diagnosis can be complicated . People with ADHD often have other problems too. Someone with ADHD can have learning disabilities, depression, etc. Someone may have symptoms that look like ADHD, but the symptoms may have other causes.

I would advise an evaluation. I wonder why you feel that you can’t get one at this time. Is it just financial? Are you worried about finding out? Can you talk to friends or others who may have personal knowledge of competent professionals?

In terms of your symptoms, I identify with several of them, but mine aren’t all caused by ADHD. In terms of spilling beverages, my beverage of choice was coffee. At a large staff meeting where I used to work, a former boss of mine said she saw that coffee had been spilled and she knew it was me. I have also had the tendency to walk into people. I don’t drive, partially because of things like this.

I have trouble organizing and get overwhelmed. Thus, I sometimes procrastinate tasks. I think these symptoms are related to ADHD. When I’m depressed, I procrastinate more.

I can be obsessive. That probably has some ADHD antecedents, due to difficulties in doing tasks, but for me its also OCD related.

I hope this helps.
