ARICET as new treatment for ADHD/LD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Has anyone heard anything about the new research using ARICET (a drug for treating Alzeimher’s disease) for ADHD and/or learning disabilities in adults? I have heard of this research but cannot find anything on the net on it.

I haven’t heard of it but it would make sense. A few years ago there was a study linking ADHD with a family history of Parkinson’s Disease.

Aren’t Alzheimer’s and ADHD deemed to be two entirely different neurological challenges?

As a speech therapist - with ADD - I would venture the following guess. One relationship between Alzheimer’s and ADHD is the frontal lobe of the brain which is largely related to attention, of course. From what I understand, a person with Alzheimer’s exhibits initial symptoms related to the frontal lobe and then the disease progresses posteriorly; whereas with other dementias, such as Pick’s dementia, the symptoms begins in the posterior part of the brain and then progresses forward. Thus - to make a story short - I would “assume” that the drug affects the frontal lobe?? Just a guess.

You said you had seen a study lnking ADHD and an family history of Parkinson’s Disease.

Would you be able to tell me where to find that article?

I was diagnosed with Parkinsons about 1 1/2 years ago and with ADHD about 6 months ago. I’m currently 54, young for Parkinsons and a little late in finding out about the ADHD.

Having read some about both disorders it struck me that the cause of each was very similar, yet when I ask my neurologist who monitors my Parkinson’s and the psychiatrist who treats me for the ADHD they were both unaware of any studies suggesting a connection between the two.

Thanks for any assistance you are able to offer.

Dave
