Concerned About Future Employment

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Per “A person’s” request, this post has been moved here. Here is the content of the original post that originally appeared on the Parenting a Child with LD or ADHD:

A Person states, “I’m almost 30. I have a job in retail that requires repetitive movement and doesn’t really require any special skills. Most every good paying job now requires you to be able to do something that isn’t easily replaceable. I have trouble with abstract reasoning and visualizing things. Most jobs in building trades are out of the question. Most Medical programs require some math intensive ability to understand the material, and I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the pace of the course work to pass the classes, not to mention that I’ve always been math illiterate.

I’m really concerned about my ld and my future in the job market. I know I have a job, but it barely pays a livable wage. Do any of you share my concerns?”

Wow, your post has been up there since October 2009 - no respones which I am surprised about, expcially in this economy.

Since we are now in June 2012 - I am hoping you are still at your job or having better one making more money?

I am was laid of last April from my job of almost 8 years in the Marketing Dept of a local auto auction. So I am still looking. And I know there are lots of people with disabilites who are having trouble getting into school or continuing with their classes b/c it’s to hard. Heck, I was kicked out of my online college “Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Division” b/c of my disability, even after I told them I had a disabiity, gave them the documents, etc. Now I have a loan and no education to show for it - sounds fair right.

So if you are looking to connect with other aduults with LD, I trying to start my future goal of creating an organization to help adults get the support/resoureces they need, so I am starting small with just creating social media sites, since my financial situation is not going to allow me to do anything else right now.

Below I will post the social media sites I’ve created, I hope you will join up and connect with others (including myself) and please feel free to email me at [email protected] to let me know what your status is. I wish you a lot of Great Luck and success, and if you any tips for me I’m ALL ears.

Good Luck

I too have a learning disability, and it is challenging to find a job that I am capable of doing. I feel the same way you do. Do you have a learning disability association where you live? They help individuals find jobs and have connection. You could look there. Hope that helps.

@Marycv

Hi, May I ask what state you live in? There is the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) in NY,NYC - www.ncld.org. Then there is the Learning Disability Association - i.e the LDANJ - is for NJ, but I am sure there has to be one for your state.
Email me if you would like me to help you find one…my email is [email protected].
