Hey, don’t look at this news as a complete bad thing!! I just found out that I was dyslexic 3 months ago and I’m 24. I always knew I had a problem since the 1st grade. I strugged with C’s,D’s and F’s from 1st to 12th grade. I started college when I was 22 and I’m telling ya it was different for me because I would keep on failing classes but, the teachers had a meeting with me to tell me that I needed to get tested for LD. I was completely torn apart. And for me it was a relief to tell my parents because that gave me support while I was getting tested. It seem like colleges support you more and you have special accommodations to help you get through college. So, wheather or not you’re going to college, dyslexic are and can be successful in the life you want and choose!!!! Also, finding out that I’m dyslexic answered a lot of personal question about my life that you can to probably can relate too. And I’ve bought some books from this site which connects you to www.amazon.com that talk about everything you want and need to know!!!!

Hi Emily,

On the Kurzweil 3000, here is a link to the site that will give you more information:

http://www.kurzweiledu.com/

Forgive me if I am repeating information you already know but for the sake of people who don’t, let me describe the Kurzweil 3000. It is OCR speech synthesis software that is scanned into the computer where the text is then read by the computer synthesizer.

One important requirement is you have to be able to integrate auditory and visual information by reading and listening to text at the same time. Anyway, I would go to their site and request a demo as since it costs alot of money, you want to make sure it is right for you.

A similar product you might want to check out is the Wynn Reader. Here is the site and you can also try it for 30 days:

http://www.freedomscientific.com/WYNN/index.asp

As far as the book, “The Gift of Dyslexia”, I have not read it nor do I know much about the author, Ron Davis, who has a website and claims alot of success with his method. However, I thought a remark by Victoria on I believe the Reading Boards was interesting. She wondered if this method was go good, why did so many people who believed in his philosophy continue to have so many grammar errors in posts that had been written?

This is someone who has taught folks with LD so that is why I was quoting her. I haven’t always agreed with her but her posts always make me think so that is why I have respect for her. Anyway, take it for what it is worth.

Good luck with the Kurzweil.

its just kind of shock to me that there finding this out as a young adult and didn’t find it as a kid

someone said to me worry is good and college stress is what i have

but sometimes i think i have anxiety and depression but who knows and then don’t know how to deal with these LD’s and don’t know what will help me since its all new to me and maybe i am just overwhelmed and stressed out and/or on an emotional rollar coaster or adventure

bye bye

Hi Emily,

I was diagnosed with various LDs at a more advanced aged than you and I felt very overwhelmed so I do know the feeling. Personally, I found therapy for depression and anxiety to be very helpful but a caveat - you need to find someone who is familiar with LD as that is so important. There are alot of therapists who are still in the dark ages about LD and if you get someone like that, you might as well save your money.

I don’t have dycalculia and dyslexia is not my prime diagnosis. You might want to visit http://www.interdys.org as that is the site for the International Dyslexia Association. The setup of their bulletin boards drive me crazy but I still think there is a lot of good information there.

As far as finding out more information about dyscalulia, LDonline might have more information if you click on the “in depth” link. You could also go to http://www.google.com and plug it into the search box and see what you come up with.

You also might want to consult your college disabilities office and see if they could give you advice on your concerns. Also, see what accomodations you are entititled. Also, ask perhaps if anybody from that office is currently using the Kurzweil 3000 so you could see what it is like. If no one is using it, ask for a demo from the company so you can try it out for 30 days.

What also helps me is to make a list of everything that is pressing and start with the number one concern. Unfortunately, you can’t address everything at once even though you feel like you have a strong need to.

It certainly can’t hurt to read the “Gift of Dyslexia” just so you can feel better about the assets of it. Just be wary of the remediation he suggests as you should be with anything that sounds too good to be true.

Hope this helps.

thanks pt again

the computer program K 3000 i am getting trained in and might get one of my tests read to me.

i still don’t know what will help and what won’t but anyways

and have been tired lately and don’t like it really anymore keeping my secrets/emotions/opinions to myself

and maybe i have been haveing low self esteem and lack of confidence

So maybe i should call a counseling office even though i don’t want to and don’t like talking to strangers in person or on the phone

if you have any more ?’s to ask EM-dawg let me know

bye bye

Hi Emily,

Regarding counseling, you might want to try your college counseling office. When I saw someone there about the possibility of an LD support group being started, I found this person quite knowledgeable. Of course, my experience is no guarantee you will find someone good but heck, since it is free, what do you have to lose?

Hey, I know what you mean about talking to strangers on the phone and in person. It’s like “well, maybe I really don’t need counseling as bad as I think I do.” But a good therapist is aware of that and will put you at ease although some issues are going to be tough no matter what.

When you’re going through the process of picking a counselor, pay attention to how you feel in talking to this person. Of course, these folks are not perfect but your instincts usually do not let you down. You also might want to think of questions you want to ask ahead of time.

Hope that helps

Hi Emily,

No you are not stupid and yes, it does mean, you will have to find what your learning strengths are to get around these weaknesses. You ask some good questions as that paragraph really isn’t saying much. Is there more to the report than just that? Could you ask the person who tested you for an explanation?

I’ll take a shot but please remember I am not a professional but just a middle age person with various LDs. Since you mentioned you have Dyslexia, I am going to guess that you spend so much time and effort decoding words that there isn’t much room left in your brain for comprehending anything.

By the way, I have seen a few studies that show that when people with Dyslexia are given unlimited time, their comprehension is at about the 65th percentile which is great. You had mentioned trying out the Kurzweil but when you’re not using it, see if by just taking extra time in reading something if your comprehension improves.

Regarding mathematics, you need to know in what areas you have problems as it isn’t very helpful to not provide that breakdown. Since Math is my good area, unfortunately, I can’t help you in speculating like I did with the reading difficulties.

Verbal retrieval and verbal memory - Hmm, not much information. I have word finding problems so could that be what that is referring to? Do you remember any test in which you had to name the picture of something? Do you feel like you have tip of the tongue syndrome, the word is within your grasp but you just can’t recall it come heck or high water?

Another possibility - I did very poorly on a verbal recall test. See, I can’t even remember the test:)) but it goes something like this, the examiner read a list of items and I had to tell him later out of which list they came from. Do you remember a test like that?

Well, that is my amateur report:)) Again, I would ask the person who did the test for clarification as that is your right as a client.

hey

yes its an accomplishment that i made it this far through school with out knowing i had any kind of learning disablity so that must mean I AM SMART and bright

just need to have more confidence and quit saying i hate math and hate to read and hate school

also need not to think that i am stupid or dumb

and since this is new to me the LD thingy and all i will find things that will help me along the way with my study and things that won’t help me along the way with my studies

all i really want is to graduate and do good in school and if i a put my mind to it i can do anything i want

i guess in away it doesn’t really matter if my parents know i have a learning disablity cause i guess its none of there bussiness

i just need to not worry so much and i need to think of happy things and try and have fun and try not to think of awful things or failures or my obstacles as a burdun

so talk to you all later

take care
you can always email me info at [email protected]

Dear Emily,
I am not sure your age. But, I am almost 30 intbetween young adult and adult hood.. I have LD for math and reading and writing. If you just found out about. If you are in school you can go to a resource teacher. If your in college go to the Vocational Rehabiltion site. You go to the library or use the internet to look up information. Approaching parents, if they are good parents they will help you through it. The key is to not let it stop you from achieving your goals.

my school as a learning disablity office

i think i might get my tests read to me or extra time for them but i don’t know

and right now behind in reading

so need to look into books on tape or cdrom

but i hope everything will go ok this semester

don’t know how to approach the parents because when i meantioned it this summer they said you don’t have disablity NO NO and no way and said i just needed to apply myself more
and sometimes they say i am worthless or not doing my potential and say work hard and you’ll do fine

some people say that i doubt myself alot and other people say i need more confidence and more positive attitude towards school and other things

basically AKA an attitude adjustment

that’s enough said of an UPDATE
thanks for writting back always
your advice is good and opinions are vauleable
