Job Drug screening

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I would like to find out what some of you all do if you have drug screening. For employment or on the job if you are taking medication for your ADD.

I don’t have personal experience, but the army prescribes medicine for soldiers for adhd and they do drug testing. If you have a prescription for your medicine and can show it to the drug testers then there shouldn’t be a problem. I believe that the testing folks would only be reporting illegal drugs that are found. Having adhd and taking medicine for it can’t be something that an employer can fire a person for, otherwise that is discrimination.

Actually that is something that I am curious about also. It seems like ritalin or other adhd stimulant medication would show up on drug testing. Can they tell the difference and if not having to disclose the use of medication seems like a violation of privacy.

Hi,

When I started on a stimulant medication and a new job I told the psychiatrist who prescribed it. She wrote a letter for me saying something to the effect that I was taking a stimulant drug or maybe she named it, and that it was for a condition she was treating me for. She did not mention the ADHD diagnosis and did not say anything about being a psychiatrist. THAT was a good thing.

I gave it to my supervisor so that he would know be fore the test.
He said it was fine and he just wanted a copy of the letter to have on file.

That was the only off limits drug in my body and I had no problem.
