LD Cure/ Research

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

As a adult with a LD, I have tried in vain to find the research that suggest there is an end to this lifelong struggle. Ofcourse I found out there is no real cure. It is a genetic disorder. There is not enough research on finding a cure, only on ways to manage it. The most compelling research found that injecting fatty acids directly on nerve cells helped to regenerate stronger new cells. Since LD is about poor wiring in the brain this is great news, but still we need more examples. I have read literature that mention the effects of nutrition and exercise on brain fuctioning in persons with LD. They say fatty acids such as (baked fish, nuts)1-2 times A WEEK and berries (blueberries, blackberries, or grape juice)1 cup DAILY and regular exercise all can significantly reduce symptoms in people with LD. Cut out or reduce red meat, junk food, and eat more vegetables. I tried this and discovered that it does make a difference. It is also very important to reduce stress in your life (cutting off unhealthy relationships, pay off debts, and DONT underestimate the power of getting a good night of rest). Take time to pamper yourself go to a spa for a day, take time to explore hidden talents, and ofcourse I close relationship with God. Try this and you wont be disappointed.

Of course there is not a cure, but one can learn how to get around one’s disability. There are bypass strategies and accomodations and special methods of learning/teaching.

Having a nutritious diet is important for any human to function, not specifically someone with LD. If one is only eating junk, ones body cannot work at optimal levels, can it? After all, one would be deficient in nutrients.

My son struggled in school since the 2nd grade. He has been diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder. He has had many of the organizational issues, memory issues and concentration issues.

We found a combination of therapies to help him. He is 13 now and is doing really well. He has had speech therapy, some emotional therapy to learn to control frustrations. We try to limit empty carbohydrates and keep him well hydrated. Drinking lots of water helps to keep him focused. Believe it or not, XBox360 Rock Band has helped him too. Something about the coordination of the sound/beat, visual beat and hitting the drum at the same time seems to be rewiring his brain or making ear/brain connections.

For several years, he had morning flax seed oil in oatmeal or yogurt for Omega 3s which is fantastic for the brain/nervous system & heart. He also takes a supplement, Elevate Brain & Eye Learning Memory Supplement by BioSource Naturals which is on Amazon.com.

http://www.amazon.com/Supplement-Learning-Contains-Vitamins-Guaranteed/dp/B001BGJGQG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1227449623&sr=1-1

It contains Amino Acids, Minerals, Vitamins & Herbs for brain and eye support. They are capsules, but they open and are tasteless in yogurt, applesauce and pudding. I am a Doctor of Naturopathy and formulated this product after 6 years of research and trying to help my son. After a month of taking it, I was getting raving emails from his teachers.
