Left Brain/Right Brain and ADD

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I got thinking about it and it occurred to me that a lot of creative people have attributes of ADD. I can think of many eccentric artist types. I wonder if anyone has done any studies on the difference between ADD and a normal person with strengths in the creative side of the left/right brain thing. (I’ve forgotten which side is usually attributed to creative and which is attributed to logic.)

Any chance that ADD is an extreme form of change from the creative brain side? Or the whole creative brain side idea and ADD are the same thing but being viewed from a different perspective?

Yes, and I find it pretty interesting. I think the book is ‘right brained children in a left brained world’ but, having read a few, I could be off

The theory is that ADD is a point on the right brain spectrum-past the normal L-R center of people who lean one way or the other but are normal-and autism is even farther down that right continuum-actually the endpoint of the line. Schizophrenia is the end point of the extreme left brain spectrum.

There may be more evidence that what is known as classic ADHD is associated a little more with the right hemisphere of the brain vs the left; at the same time, the use of the term attention deficits can involve what are believed to be different locations in the brain including both the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

Every person with an attention challenge is a little different from the next person. It’s often a matter of time to begin to gradually sort out the possible locations of the attention deficit; however, year 2002 - the term ADHD is so broadly used that it does not really carry a specific location today (my view) - although it could - but for some reason there is a relunctance for researchers to pin it all down. Most researchers still use the term ADHD is a very general manner.

I at the present doing a research paper on creative and successful people with A.D.D. There is a lot of information on this subject on the internet. A good one is www.oneaddplace.com. I have also found info on right brain/left brain you just have to surf for it. Learning styles is another one you can look for. Goodluck! Finding out more about this subject has helped me understand many things about myself as well as my family who have passed it down from generation to generation. Many in my family are very artistic and creative people.
