looking for help

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Just found this forum and so far I am impressed. I am looking for some kind of help and guidance for me to help my daughter. She is 21 and has learning disabilities. I am looking for information to some type of resources for her as she has not been able to find or keep a job. She lives in the Ft. Worth Texas area. But any kind of information or leads to resources to enroll her in would be greatly appreciated. I don’t know of any services to contact. Thanks to everyone and good luck to you!

I think a good place to start would be with a neuro-psychologist. They are best at figuring out the nature of cognitive disabilities. Unfortunately you are in Texas and as we all know Texas lags the rest of the country in education and enlightenment in general. Take our president for example. He is severely mentally impaired. A neuro psychologist would not be of any value in figuring out his brain. That job would fall to a proctologist. I digress.

An acurrate diagnosis is essential. The

YOu crack me up :)
There are probably some good neuropsychs in TX anyway. Even a tolerable one will get some scores and if you post them (borrow a fake name if it feels funnY) say on the parenting LD board you’ll get good advice about it.

Hi Deb!
Are there any rehabilitation centers in your area? I live near Charleston,WV, my son, stepson and, daughter-in-law were clients of the WV Rehabilitation Center, which is governmentally funded. Great to see our tax dollars at work in such a productive manner! Now, all have gainful employment, are independant and, paying taxes. The process started with an evaluation to assess abilities and needs. Next, training was provided through Goodwill Industries, jobs coaches assigned and jobs located, this is called supportive employment. The job coach physically stays with the employee until the employee can preform the required duties on their own. After the couch exits Goodwill reviews the employees progress and or needs, and is available to assist with whatever problems may arise. Good luck in your endeavors!
