I think I suspect myself to be dyslexic (not yet seen a doctor), but isn’t sure and would like to hear your guidance.
I’m do have symptoms on like:
- missing 1/2 words when reading or cannot locate the word in the dictionary even though the word is on the page.
- slight differculty is reading analogue clock, I cannot look at the clock and tell the time immediately. I need some time maybe a few seconds to determine the time of the minute hand.
- I’m very weak in spelling. In constructing sentences, I myself find the sentences logical and understanding, but to others, people do not understand the piece of writing. Sometimes when I do editing, I can spot the error and other times I can’t.
- I do have ocassion where I always misread words like ‘63’, I can read as ‘36’ without knowing, but sometimes will realised especially when the final number do not match in Mathematics questions. I also do have times when I miscopy words like ‘# = C(9,3)’ , I can copy as ‘C = (9,3)’. I will not notice even when mistake is pointed out, unless someone specifically point the mistake out repeatedly until I realised the mistake.
The problem I’m facing now is that should I seek a doctor for a dyslexic test?
Because these symptoms happen randomly and ocassionally, hence when I am doing the dyslexic test, I may or may not spot my mistake and this would results in inaccurate results. Furthermore, I’m a undergraduate in local university and had been through the education system as a normal individual, will it be werid for me to ask if I’m dyslexic because most people discover when they are a child.
However, if I do not go, I will never know if I’m dyslexic because some of these symptoms is posing problems to my daily routine and reading questions during examinations.
So do you think my chances of being dyslexic is very high?

My sister was in her second year of college when one of her professors told her she needed to be tested for a learning disability. I don’t remember all the details but it had something to do with failing the multiple choice portion of an exam and getting 100% on everything else. She went to the “learning center” and was tested by the university. She was the first person in my family to be given an official diagnosis of Dyslexia. I’m sure my father, my brother have it and I think I have a mild case of it. Anyway, once she was diagnosed she was given a lot of accommodations that helped her.
I don’t think it is too late. Finding out why you struggle will only help you help yourself become more successful in school and in life. I say go for it and the sooner the better.
Does the university you attend do this type of testing? If so, can you get the testing done through them? It would save you a lot of money. I was told that the tests to diagnose dyslexia where we live will cost $300.00.

Hi Anneliese,
The symptoms above are similar to symptoms experienced by people with binocular vision problems. Both eyes aren’t working well together. This can be fixed.
You asked for guidance. If I were you, I would find the nearest [i]developmental optometrist[/i] by going to their website at [url=http://covd.org]COVD.org[/url] and using the Locate a Doctor search box.
If he finds a problem, it can often be overcome with vision therapy.

It’s important to note and many people confuse the issue a psychologist is a Ph’D type of Doctor and a psychiatrist is an MD type of doctor. The MD can prescribe medicine, the Ph’D can not.

I’m not sure where you live but in UK universities they will (as far as I no) help you get assessed for dyslexia. Your right when you say most people are diagnosed with it as a child but I was one to who was thought there was something wrong at school but nothing was done. It wasn’t until I got to university a tutor spotted it right away. Your university if you in UK should have a disability office where you can find a support worker to help you threw the process. If you need to no any more just ask.
You need a psychologist to test you, not a doctor.
