Recent blindeness of autistic

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi, I look after a woman, 23 years old who has multiple disabilities, she is autistic and has alot of processing disorders. She is also deaf in one ear and has recenlty became blind. My problem is that she used to rely on picture cards and schedules to know what was happening, to understand the world and to communicate. Now that she cannot see the pictures we are having trouble keeping her calm and using functional communication with her. She is very smart and was always learning new things before. I am trying tactile schedules and tactile sign, also trying to teach her braille but is hard because her comprehension of language is very poor. She has no family or friends, although she wants them and is getting very depressed now that she can no longer functionally communicate and learn like she used to. If anyone has any ideas or ways I can help her I would greatly appreciate it. Services are difficult to obtain at the moment, she is on waiting lists but unless I pay for services I won’t get any for her and we are only on pension which isn’t much after expenses and medications etc. Is there a better way I could be teaching her?
