Responsible

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I had a question about who is responsible for causing a mild LD problem grow worse. It is alot of things. When you are in school, if they do not accomodate you for your problems. You never learn how to do basic skills, you become an illeterate bumpkin. They are all part of the power structure of the educational gestapo. Refusing us accomodations is like telling a deaf person no sign language talk like a regular person. Any thoughts ?

I don’t think the ADA will allow schools to refuse acommodations.
I know that LDs often go unrecognized, undiagnosed, untreated.
My sure was.
But once I was an adult, I refused to be passive about it. No matter who you are, everybody has a whole lot of living and learning to do. It’s not all about academic skills, and you sure don’t sound like an illiterate bumpkin.
You don’t have to have any sort of diagnosed disorder to dislike yourself.
Here’s an open secret: Most people dislike themselves quite thoroughly in one or more aspects. Even those who appear to have everything, dislike themselves for something, and self-hatred is not uncommon.
Remember that most people don’t have any idea what learning disabilities are. I don’t blame an “educational gestapo” or anyone else.
And (here’s the trick..) I’m learning how to not blame myself.

I think there’s a major difference between a ld “becoming worse” itself and the symptoms becoming more pronounced becuase its not being addressed.

I do agree that if the school does not accomodate your special needs then ur situation is going to get worse. I had this happen between a grade change - my support services were removed and everything fell apart for me that year until the folowing year when my support services were given back.

I disagree with ‘changed’ in that schools can find ways to not provide services when they so desire - which unfortunately does happen. I do agree tho with in that u can’t blame “an education gestapo”.

Externalizing your anger by blaming the system only further distances you from your own anger and pain. Of course there is a kernel of truth in what you say, ableism is systematic, routine, pervasive and institutional oppression. The question really is how do you deal with your internalized oppression? Figure that out and being responsible will take on new meaning……..

The ultimate “responsible” is our own, regardless of what gestapos we deal with.

Time for regime change in some of these school systems.
