Hi,
I am homeschooling my 8th grade son for the first time. I am having a real problem getting books. I don’t want religous books because that wasn’t the reason for homeschooling. Is there a way to order the same curriculum books that are used in school? I tried to get “Time for Kid “but am having a hard time because I only need 1 copy. Any suggestions?

Look at Rainbow Resource Center www.rainbowresource.com.
They have a large homeschooling catalog with all sorts of material. Some of it is relgiously based—one audience—but there are lots of other things too. They have a lot of the popular math and reading programs too.

You can get the books from the same places the schools get them, the publishers. Talk to teachers or the school secretary to find out what they are .
Those materials will, though, be geared to classroom teachers — but it’s where I get my “what am I going to teach” from. Then I go to the library and the world wide web to find ways to really teach the important stuff… and then we “read the text” once we know it and students are just amazed at how smart they are and how good they are at understanding it.
For content that works for LD kids I like Fearon for a starting point… and I use the Virginia SOL’s which are online as mroe “what my kid should know in what grade.”
You might do a little websearch on supplies for homeschoolers. Not all of them are religiously oriented. I have done some of this— maybe have different needs, but I am tutoring and need small amounts as well.
Some companies deal pretty well with homeschoolers.
Math U See; Read America, etc. deal esp. with homeschoolers. If your kid has math or reading problems— Lindamood Bell has some parent friendly materials. You’d stay away from the big publishers.
