starting a support group

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi.

I have a 12 year old son who has language LD, is shy, has no friends. I have read here that many LD kids are lonely. Is there any way to start a support group/social group with parents who have kids in special ed, and then maybe similar kids could develop friendships? Has anyone attended or run such a group? A problem could be that the group would have parents with kids of varying ages (anywhere from K-8) and varying situations/problems. Not sure what to do!

What about Scouts? My 12yo is not the life of the party but enjoys an activity-based, adult led, multi-age Scout Troop. The Scout values of respect, good behavior, etc. really help everyone have a good time.

Scouts sounds good, but I don’t even think kids this age do it any more.

Still, I am tired of being the odd one out, which is why I was thinking of a group which includes others facing similar problems.

Anne-Marie,
Your son can certainly be part of scouts! It has been the best outlet for my 11 yr old son. He feels like part of the group and with the respect he is shown, his self-esteem has improved. As a parent, you can be involved too. Give it a try…you both may really find it rewarding!

Hi Anne Marie,

You certainly can start a support group of like minded parents and it can be as small or as large as you want. I have started a group and we now have 12 parents. Some of the kids have connected, some have not but the support plus the information sharing are great benefits even if the children don’t click. Sometimes the parents can recommend what they have done that worked or didn’t work. If you are interested in starting your group, I’d be happy to let you know what worked for me. Just email me offline.
