Looking for Assistance Desperately!!!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Can anyone help me with this. I have a five year old about to go into first grade. Well this year in kindergarten some issues arose that the teacher failed to inform (us) the parents until well aweek in (May) or two before school ended. I stayed in close contact with my child’s teacher. I saw growth truly I did. Apparently not enough for this teacher. Well I have to move on past that now.

Ok. had she(the teacher) of told us in the school year of these concerns, I may now have a center for our child to attend. We have called and called around to find A Speech specialist that can see our child, so many of these places are booked up, some say she won’t be able to get in until October or November!!!! Even then once the have serviced their current waiting list, they will then have patients they have not seen since last year. Make sense to me no! But there are many little ones needing services, that are as badly in need as my child?

Can anyone tell me of a reputable place here in Montgomery County I am desperate, but I also want the best of care for my child. Please let me know asap. I just called my 12th person that can’t see her, and no one will make promises.

I knwo this maybe posted inthe wron place but the board has changed since I last visited I am lost.

Polly,

I have been exactly in your shoes when my son was 4 yrs. old. You cannot wait for schools to test etc. get whatever help you can get a.s.a.p.

What I had to start out with was a wonderful college student who was going into her senior yr. as an audiologist. Contact local colleges to that have education programs. If you are Montgomery Co. , Md. try Towson, AU, Maryland U.

In my experience college students have worked very hard with my son, he loves the young people, they have made learning more fun. Although they may not have all the credentials or experience yet you can count on enthusiam. The costs are also reasonable.

Good luck. I know your frustration.

Maybe you should reconsider her for first grade. She seems like an awfully young child for first (unless she turns 6 right away) and being one year younger than the other kids is a HUGE difference at that age. If she’s at all LD, then she will struggle even harder.

Check out LindamoodBell.com for centers around the country. You don’t say what your issues are but my son, who has speech & LD issues made huge progress with intensive 1:1 Lindamood-Bell programs. They were more effective in 120 hours than the past 6 years of services from the school distict. Even if there is no center near you, you still may want to look for a therapist who uses their style of teaching.
Good Luck
