Hi Sandy. I too have an 11 y/o child with NLD. The foremost goal in our house is to have a child who is happy, with a good self-esteem, who looks forward to every day. Before dx our daughter was in such a state of doom and gloom because she was struggling so terribly inside and the people on the outside..parents, teachers etc. were totally clueless. We have an IEP in place since last year that addresses issues such as , modified testing (untimed, adapted etc.) She gets Title 1 math help in a reg classroom..just needs that extra eye on her. There are also issues on discipline..the school is not to use recess for her to make up work if she’s behind because she needs that break in the day. We also have stipulations as to how she is to be spoken to if she answers incorrectly in class…not screamed at and told how she ” SHOULD KNOW THIS STUFF” That happened too often! NLD is so manageable if it is addressed in the right way with love, understanding and support for the child. Our daughter loves school now, and is a happy, confident little girl all because we as parents finally understand what she needs to succeed .
