Parental Involvement in IEP Meetings

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Does anyone have any creative ideas as to how I can increase attendance by parents at IEP meetings. I teach in an inner city high school and despite phone calls, 3 letters each, and pleading with students attendance by parents was very low. Is it your opinion that some parents loose interest by the time students get to high school?
Thanks!

Not just losing interest, but becoming frustrated and cynical. Some of them never wanted to be involved anyway. Some of them are frightened by authority and want to keep a low profile. Some of them tried to be involved and got told that the child’s problems were all their fault (we’ve all heard that before here, haven’t we?) Some are poor and ashamed of it. Some are working. Some are taking care of other kids. There’s a story behind every family, and the more you get to know them, the more you’ll be amazed at how much your students do succeed in.
