self-esteem research

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

In addition to having had a child with special needs, I am also a master’s student in nursing at Indiana University School of Nursing. I am conducting research on how parents evaluate self-esteem in their nonverbal children with disabilities. I am seeking volunteer participants who are willing to answer a research question and then illustrate their answer by using stories about how they come to this evaluation. All participation is a strictly volunteer basis and anyone may withdraw from participation at any time. I plan to use the information to develop a questionnaire that will help in evaluating self-esteem in non verbal children. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are willing to participate. Thank you.

My 10 yr old son struggles with non-verbal language and self esteem. Actually since you have been researching this topic you may already be familiar with this video — but just this morning I watched a video titled: Working with Underachievers: The Five Building Blocks of Self-Esteem by Dr. Michele Borba. It was very good and is geared towards teachers. It empowers them to use their power to find a kids strength, make them aware of it and then capitalize on it in order to build self esteem. I really enjoyed it and plan on sharing it with my Son’s teacher and the entire LD staff at our school. There is a # on the video to call to get a copy — 800-327-4269. I’m not sure of the cost — somewhere between 50 & 70 but is was worth it!
