My son is 5 years old and has demonstrated exceptional mathematical abilities well beyond what children his age normally do.(he can do multiplication in his head knows place values to hundred thousands etc.. loves Monopoly and geography) however he has a lot of trouble with writing and verbal communication although he can read at a 2nd grade level. I can see right now that the writing issue is only going to get worse as he gets older. I believe that he has a learning disorder. (After a story is read to him he can’t tell us what happened in the story).and I would like him to be evaluated before he enters Kindergarten in the fall. The teachers I’ve spoken with tell me to just enroll him and he will be tested after the first 6 weeks for any problems he might have. This is six weeks of other children learning their letters and numbers while my son is bored out of his mind. I don’t really know where to start in regards to dealing with the school system. We live in north Texas. Please, any advice would be very helpful.

What kinds of verbal communication difficulties have you noticed? I would also recommend referral to you child find/child study team, but they may or may not test based on how he is performing academically. Have you discussed your concerns with your pediatrician? You always have the option of having him tested privately to provide additional information. However, a diagnosis alone will not guarantee eligibility for special services. Ask about the school division’s gifted education resources, etc.
Rather than trying to go through teachers, write a letter to the district special ed department requesting testing under Child Find.
