IEP and math level

Hi I have a quick question.
My son is 10 yr old started 5th grade this year. His IEP has a level of second grade for his goals the last was:
In 27 weeks when he is presented with 2nd grade random addition and subtraction applied problems, he will choose the appropriate operation and calculate the correct answer, using manipulatives as needed, with 86% accuracy when given 3 out of 4 opportunities.

This is consistent with his testing levels too. However he is doing work out of his 5th grade math book. I asked his resource teacher and she said he does both levels. Which seems exteremly confusing to me. He also has memory issues. We have his next iep meeting at the start of oct. Any help would be great.THANKS!!!

My first question would be “Why is he working on both grade levels?” My guess is that they are having him complete 5th grade material in order to give him exposure and work toward getting him back on grade level (goal of special education). My only concern might be an increase in frustration when attempting task demands that are about three grade levels above his current skill level. I would probably ask for further clarification from his teacher.

Hi Tjjd71,
The crucial issue, is whether the work that he is doing in the 5th grade math book, is appropriate for his current maths abilities?
If it involves exercises that are beyond his current abilities? Then it will no doubt have a negative effect. As it will just create confusion.
But perhaps more importantly, what are they doing to help him?
I might mention that I run a forum for the maths disorder Dyscalculia, which you might like to have a look at?
Where you will actually need to learn enough about Maths Difficulties, to be able to teach your son’s resource teacher/s about it?

I agree with Patrick, it is probably for the exposure and he isn’t being held accountable for it.

If you are seeing fustration/angry,etc., in your son this exposure needs to stop. His mental health is important.
