12 year old daughter wants to learn how to play guitar but..

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

she has motor planning issues and some inattentiveness, although does have the desire - mainly because I think she wants to buy a “cool-looking” guitar.
I feel she needs a teacher used to working with kids that have special needs, although my husband says she can probably learn from a regular guitar teacher that is patient.
Any thoughts? Has anyone else gone through this and had any success? Kathy

Hi, my eldest dd is 11. We bought Girls Guitar Method by Tish Carvalo. It is very basic and I’ve even started tinkering a bit. The deal is when my daughter finishes the book I will then consider lessons. I don’t want to waste money if shes not really interested. go to www.daisyrock.com they are the writers of the book and specialize in guitars for girls only. they have a slimmer neck and smaller scale so its easier to play for the average female.

One thing I noticed is that it is taking her longer to learn and she really has to concentrate on reading the music. Once she gets it though she just plays by memory.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion - I went on the website and looked at the guitars and the book. I know she would love one of those guitars, although notice prices were not listed.
It seems like you have to have a guitar to do it along with the book - did you already buy her a guitar?
Thanks, Kathy

You can rent musical instruments, and this often is a good alternative when a child first becomes interested in music. She may find the guitar is not for her, but would like the mandolin or a bowed instrument, instead. Also, I would let her just have fun with it and not push the lessons. LD or ADHD kids can become frustrated with any activity that resembles “school.”

Music Ace software is helpful for teaching note reading and music theory. It is based on the piano keyboard, but is helpful for all instruments. Amazon is usually the cheapest place to purchase this. There are more lessons in Music Ace 1 and Music Ace 2 than in the deluxe version (which is a combination of the two).

Hi, thanks for all the responses so far, I may purchase the Daisy Rock Book, just because I think that might keep her motivated, the suggestion about renting a guitar is a good idea - I am afraid if I buy her one and she feels she can’t do it, or loses interest I will be out money — I personally feel knowing my daughter she will need an instructor that will keep on top of her - she is a visual learner and probably needs a teacher, book and a guitar, however, will start with a book.
