4th -8th grade

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

I was just informed that my sons school will be closing to save money in the district. So the students in grade K-3 will go the elementary school. The students in fourth grade will go to the middle school. So it will be fourth grade to eighth grade. I’m having a hard time with this, he just grad from the third grade it was a real struggle he came from behind, he had to have summer school to pass to the third grade and he grad with A/B honor roll he came from so far behind to honor roll. I am in such pain to see this happen. The school is wanting to put him with 7th and 8th graders what are they thinking.

It used be that elem schools were k-8. The invention of jr high was to accomodate the baby boom. Then to adjust for falling numbers, the ninth grade was moved back to the high school and replaced by the moving 5th and 6th grade to jr high and calling it middle school. So now your district is moving 4th grade.

Remember, he will be with kids his age. How is the school going to accomodate the younger kids-be proactive on this. Ask now about playground equipment, recess schedule, lunch schedules. 4th grade needs are not 8th grade needs-your district knows it, so what are they doing about it?

I’d be concerned about being on the youngest on the bus. But then I’m not big on the education that goes on during the busride.

Ask those questions with a smile, in a group, and often.
