8 year old may have ADD--help me!

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

this may be long or short. my eight year old has been in special ed since first grade. the possibility of ADD has been there because he lacks focus, loses questions in the middle of them , and has to be brought back in to lessons etc.
i am scared about the medications available but i also see behaviors and problems with being frustrated at home. he cries over homework. teacher, special ed teacher, psychologist all agree he is bright, great kid—never any behavior problems no evidence of hyperactivity. he has an iep he tested out of reading this year, but now has tested into math and written language. i would be most grateful for any thoughts, opinions, or suggestions.

My son who is 9 is ADD without the behavior problems his a little hipe but not too bad. We finally got him into resource classes last year. I did not want to just automatically assume he hass ADD because the school thought so. I took him to 2 different doctors to have him evaluated… In school we noticed a problem in reading like you other subjects started to be difficult for him. I too did not want to put my son on medication but after weeks of crying during homework and my son saying that he was “stupid” I hadt to take a chance. I have to say that after 3 different types of medication we finally found one that is working pretty good..We are going back to the doctor for a little fine tuning with it but all and all it seems to have helped. It has been about a year and a half since I decided to try the medication. And I am happy to say that my son now how more confidence since he is able to stay focused in class and actually hear what the teacher is teaching…School is still difficult for him and I thinkit always will be… I think that you have to weigh the pros and cons and definately talk with his doctor. One other thing, I decided to ONLY give the medication on school days….keep us posted and take care

I understand what you are expressing. I went through similar issues with my 8 year old son when he was 6. My Pediatrician sent me to a training center called Neuropathways for help. Their program assisted us in staying off Ritalin and improving behaviors and academics. I am now a trainer for them in California and I cannot recommend them enough to any parent. They taught us how the brain grows new neural pathways and how to re pattern these pathways in order to achieve the results we wanted. My son’s teacher says he is such a smart and sweet boy to have in class now. I am proud of him too!
Contact me and I will see if I can get you some local information for your area. It makes all the difference and you deserve it!

I have emailed you once already but I just read that you are a trainer for Neuropathways. How does one become a trainer for them. We live in a small town in Alabama and the special education here in our town stinks, from the director for special education down to the teacher. We have a support groupd that meets once a month for parents to discuss different things that we are trying that is helping our children I would like to get information to present to the group at our next meeting. Thanks Teresa Sewell
