Auditory Processing Disorder

Submitted by an LD OnLine user on

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give my advice on finding out if my daughter might have auditory processing disorder. The reason I maybe thinking this is because she is very sensitive to any kind of loud noises. I have been getting home notes from her teacher saying she explained it several times, she is in 2nd grade. She did have quite a few ear infections as a toddler. They were at one time thinking about putting tubes in her ears. She is having a very difficult time with math. My son is 12 years old and he was just diagnosed this past school year with LD. And his teachers last week told me he is a auditory learner. What would be my first steps in trying to find this out. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Talk to an audiologist and have her tested for CAPD. I am hearing impaired but I am extremely distracted by any noises and easily startled. I also have ADD so you may want to look into that as well she may be zoning in and out with her attention during class.

Pattim is right. Be sure that the audiologist specializes in CAPD. Regular audiologists do not have the necessary training!

You can find CAPD audiologists in your area at http://pages.cthome.net/cbristol/ (click on links, then scroll nearly to botto of page). If you have a choice, audiologists at universities tend to be very good.
